About the Examination Process
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination conducted for admission to postgraduate engineering programs and recruitment in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
Plan of Examination
- The GATE examination follows a structured format and is conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) with a duration of 3 hours.
- The total marks for the exam are 100, comprising 65 questions divided into two sections: General Aptitude (GA), which includes 10 questions worth 15 marks, and the Core Subject, which has 55 questions accounting for 85 marks.
- The questions are of two types: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. GATE offers over 30 subjects/papers, covering a wide range of fields, including traditional engineering disciplines such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Computer Science, and Electronics, as well as interdisciplinary areas like Environmental Science, Biotechnology, and Data Science.
- Candidates can select up to two papers, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen combination. This structure ensures a comprehensive assessment of candidates’ aptitude and technical knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
- The candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in B.Tech/B.E./B.Arch or equivalent in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after diploma), and candidates in their final year of graduation are eligible to apply.
- Those with a Master’s Degree in M.Sc./M.A./MCA or equivalent in Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are also eligible, including final-year candidates.
- Regarding the age limit, there is no restriction on the age of candidates applying for GATE.
- As for nationality, Indian nationals are eligible to apply, and foreign nationals from countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can also apply, subject to specific conditions.
Number of Attempts
There is no limit on the number of attempts for GATE.

- Application Fee varies by category (approx. ₹2800 for general candidates; discounts for reserved categories and female candidates).
Admission Process
- Online Registration through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) portal.
- Application Fee is 1700 rupees for General/OBC; and 850 rupees for SC/ST/PwD/Female candidates.
