About the Examination Process
The National Defence Academy (NDA) examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for candidates who wish to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Plan of Examination
- The NDA written examination is a pen-and-paper-based test comprising two papers including Mathematics (300 marks, 2.5 hours) and General Ability Test (GAT) (600 marks, 2.5 hours), totaling 900 marks.
- The GAT covers subjects like English, General Knowledge, and Current Affairs. The questions are in the form of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with negative markings for incorrect answers, where 1/3rd of the marks are deducted for each wrong response.
- Candidates who perform well in the written exam are shortlisted and results are declared on the UPSC website.
Eligibility Criteria
- The eligibility criteria for the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination, as prescribed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), are specific and comprehensive.
- First, candidates must be Indian nationals, though foreign nationals from countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka may also apply, subject to conditions.
- In terms of age, candidates must be at least 16.5 years old and not exceed 19.5 years on the 1st of January or 1st of July of the examination year.
- Educational qualifications vary by the branch of the military one intends to join. For the Army Wing, candidates must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognized board.
- For those aspiring to join the Air Force or Navy Wings, candidates need to have completed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- Candidates who are in their final year of school or graduation are also eligible to apply.
- The NDA exam is open only to unmarried male candidates, with a requirement to meet specific physical standards set by the NDA, including vision, height, weight, and overall fitness.
- Although the NDA is primarily open to male candidates, there are discussions about eligibility for female candidates in certain conditions.
- Additionally, candidates must not have a criminal record or medical conditions that would disqualify them from service.
- These eligibility criteria ensure that candidates are academically and physically fit for the challenges of training and service in the Indian Armed Forces.
